Digicam That Encourages Printing
February 1, 2012 | 1:24 pm
An interesting new concept was recently announced in the point-and-shot digital camera market that is aimed at getting all of us to print out more of the images we are capturing.
A relatively new company called Jazz-Digitac is launching a line of very affordable ($15-$20) media card-less digital cameras that feature a retractable USB plug that can be inserted into a retail photo kiosk to instantly print the images captured.
The cameras hold approximately 72 pictures and come in a variety of colors and designs and all feature a 1.5-inch…

A Word About What Kodak Did Right
January 19, 2012 | 2:54 pm
Ever since Kodak hit the financial rocks, there’s been no end to the post-mortems. Indeed, Kodak has become something of a case study of how not to handle a technological-shift in the business world (Kodak famously invented the digital camera decades ago but squirreled it away lest it eat into their film revenues).
And the facts do speak for themselves – Kodak’s filed for bankruptcy, so obviously they’ve done more than a few things wrong. But rather than join the pile-on, it’s worth pointing out that, from a consumer…
HP Faux Canvas
January 4, 2012 | 12:26 pm
We’ve been big fans of getting your images done as gallery warps and canvas prints and we’ve covered a number of sites that provide this service. The finished product is beautiful but the one caveat is the price as a well-done canvas print can cost north of $50 depending on the size you choose.
We recently posted an item on HP’s deal with Walmart and Meijer stores to offer what they are calling a “Faux Canvas” print service. The deal here is, along with being…
Shiny, Happy (Aluminum) Photos
December 28, 2011 | 1:13 pm
Sounds a bit strange at first but once you see an image printed on aluminum it’s pretty cool and quite stunning and we’ve actually tested a couple of these services of late and are excited to report the results were dazzling.
Aluminyze.com will put your image on a lightweight but hard sheet of aluminum using a special technology that actually infuses the image right into the body of the aluminum. A translucent coating is also placed over the image and you can order a easel stand built right into the…

How to Protect Your Printer From Hackers
December 1, 2011 | 1:18 pm
Earlier this week, Columbia Researchers set the printer world aflame with revelations that Internet-connected printers were extremely vulnerable to hacks and information theft. Joseph Fieber offers some hints on how to protect yourself. Most of these are aimed at IT managers in a business setting, but three of them would work for those of us with a run-of-the-mill home printer that connects to a network (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
So what should you do? First – unplug your printer from your network and connect it directly to your computer…
Researchers: Millions of Printers Vulnerable to Hacks
November 30, 2011 | 9:54 am
In September, security researchers alerted the public that printers that connect to the Internet were vulnerable to hacks. Now, MSNBC is reporting that another team of researchers at Columbia University has discovered that not only can hackers penetrate into Internet-connected printers and steal valuable information sent to the printer (tax returns, etc.) but can even (potentially) set them on fire (although the researchers were not able to blow any up). Here’s the scoop:
Printers can be remotely controlled by computer criminals over the Internet, with the potential to…
